Sending, and what happens next

What we do the moment you press send, and how to follow progress.

Last updated

Press Send Now on the Review and send step. Your signers are emailed straight away, the envelope appears in Envelopes, and everything that happens to it from that moment is recorded. If you would rather finish later, press Save as Draft instead. A draft can be reopened from its page with Edit, and nothing about it is fixed until you send it.

An envelope is the document you sent for signature, together with everyone who has to act on it.

Before you press it

The Review and send step is a last look, and nothing has gone out yet. Check the recipients and their roles, the field count beside each signer, and the subject line, which you can still edit here.

Beside each signer is Notify via:. Leave it on Email and we send the request for you. Choose Copy link manually and we give you their link instead, for you to send however you like.

What your recipient receives

An email with the subject Please sign: followed by your subject line. It carries your covering note if you wrote one, a button reading Review & Sign Document, and a line beneath saying when the request expires. The same link appears as plain text at the foot, for anyone whose email will not show the button.

It comes from your own name unless a sender name has been set for you or for the whole account, in which case that is used instead.

The link is personal to that recipient. Nobody needs a CecurSign account, and there is nothing to install. They open the document in their browser, complete the fields you gave them, sign by drawing, typing or picking a saved signature, and finish.

If you chose sequential signing, only the first person is emailed now. Each next person is emailed automatically when the one before them finishes.

A panel headed Envelope Sent! appears immediately, listing each of those recipients with their link and a Copy button. This is the only time those links are laid out for you together, so copy what you need before closing it. They are always available afterwards one at a time, from the Recipients panel on the envelope's own page.

The same panel confirms which recipients we emailed for you.

Following it

Open Envelopes and find yours, or click through from Home. Each row carries a status:

  • Draft: saved but not sent.
  • Sent: it has gone and nobody has opened it yet.
  • Viewed: someone has opened it.
  • Partially signed: at least one person has signed and at least one has not.
  • Completed: everyone has signed and the finished document is ready.
  • Declined, Voided, Expired: it ended without completing.

Filter the list by status, by folder, by client, or search by subject or recipient.

Open the envelope itself and the strip along the top gives you the answer most visits are after: how many of your recipients have signed, how many documents there are and when it expires. Below that, the Recipients panel shows where each person has got to, and the audit trail beside it records everything in order, from Envelope sent through Document viewed and Recipient signed to Envelope completed.

Nudging, correcting and stopping

Send Reminder on the envelope emails everyone who has not yet signed.

Void envelope, in the menu beside it, withdraws the document. Every signing link stops working immediately and all recipients are told. You are asked for a reason, which is kept in the record. Use this if you sent the wrong thing. See Cancel an envelope someone has already opened.

Resend with previous answers appears once an envelope has completed or been declined, and sends it out again keeping the field values already filled in.

When it completes

You get an email, and so does every recipient with Send copy of completed document ticked. That tick is on by default, which is why a CC normally receives the finished document without your doing anything.

On the envelope's page you can then download the signed PDF, the certificate of completion naming who signed and when, and the full evidence pack. See Getting the signed document.

If nothing seems to be happening

Check the status first. An envelope still reading Sent after a day usually means the email is sitting unopened, not that anything failed. Ask the recipient to check their junk folder, confirm the address on the envelope, and if in doubt copy their personal signing link and send it to them yourself. See My client says they never received the email.
