Allowances, and what happens when you reach one
How your monthly allowance is counted, and what to do if you run out.
Last updated
Your allowance is the figure on Settings › Billing & plan, under Usage. Each meter shows what you have used against what your plan allows, so that panel is the answer to "how many have I got left" rather than anything you need to work out.
The meters
- Envelopes this period. An envelope is a document you sent for signature together with everyone who has to act on it, so a contract going to three signatories is one envelope, not three.
- Proposals this period.
- Templates. A running total of the reusable documents you keep, not something counted per period.
- Team members. How many people are in the account. It reads full the moment your seats are taken, which is normal rather than a warning: seats are an allocation, not something that accumulates.
- Webhooks.
What "this period" means
Your billing period, not the calendar month. If you are billed on the twelfth, you are counted from the twelfth. The Current plan panel above the meters shows when the current one renews.
What counts, and when
Envelopes are counted when you send, not when you create. Drafts are free, duplicating one is free, and deleting a draft is not a refund because it never cost anything. Sending is the moment the meter moves.
A document you sign on the Self sign screen does not count. Nothing went to anybody, so nothing comes off your allowance. It still gets its own audit trail and certificate of completion. Ticking I am one of the signers on an envelope you are sending to a client is a different thing, and that envelope is counted, because you sent it.
An envelope created when a client accepts a proposal does not count. That commitment was already counted when you sent the proposal, and a client accepting an engagement letter should never be turned away over a limit they cannot see.
Proposals are counted when you send them, on the same basis: a draft you are still writing costs nothing.
When you reach one
The action is refused with a message naming the figure, for example that you have reached your envelope limit for this billing period. Nothing else changes: you can still sign in, open everything, download everything, and anyone already part-way through signing a document you sent can finish it.
The remedy is to move to a plan with more room, which you start from the same billing screen. See Upgrading, downgrading and cancelling.
The meters reset at the start of your next billing period. If you are close to a limit two weeks in, that is worth knowing before the month you would rather not run out in.
Booster packs
Some accounts hold a booster pack, bought once and drawn on when you need it. When yours does, a Booster packs panel appears on the billing screen directly under Usage, showing:
- Credits available, for envelopes and for proposals.
- Packs on your account, listing what is left of each pack you hold.
- Available on your plan, if there is a pack you could add. Ask us about a booster opens a support request.
A booster is tied to the plan it was bought for. If you move to a different plan, the panel says your boosters are not active on this plan: nothing is lost, and moving back makes them available again.
Other limits worth knowing
Documents you upload have a maximum size, and a bulk send run has a maximum number of recipients. See Which files you can upload, and how large and Sending the same document to many people.
Your own account's figures are on the billing screen; the published comparison across plans is on the pricing page.
